With the Derby in the rear view mirror, it i son to the second Jewel of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico. Nyquist is heading into the race as the heavy favorite, with a morning line of 3/5. He faces only Exaggerator and Lani coming out of the Derby; the rest in the field of 11 are new shooters. Local prep Federico Tesio winner Awesome Speed is back in the Triple Crown mix (won the Mucho Macho Man and ran 4th behind Mohaymen in the Fountain of Youth). Abiding Star comes in off of a win in the Parx Derby and makes it four Uncle Mo’s in the field. Besides Awesome Speed, Uncle Lino and Laoban bring some added speed to the field, but with the fast fractions that Nyquist ran with two weeks ago, the extra speed should be no problem. Stradivari has been sensational for Todd Pletcher, winning a Keeneland allowance last time out. Should be live here, although has only raced three times and just once this year.
Earlier today they drew the Post Positions for the Preakness and here they are:
– Cherry Wine (C Lanerie, D Romans) – 20/1
– Uncle Lino (F Perez, G Sherlock) – 20/1
– Nyquist (M Gutierrez, D O’Neill) – 3/5
– Awesome Speed (J Toledo, A Goldberg) – 30/1
– Exaggerator (K Desormeaux, J Desormeaux) – 3/1
– Lani (Y Take, M Matsunaga) – 30/1
– Collected (J Castellano, B Baffert) – 10/1
– Laoban (F Geroux, E Guillot) – 30/1
– Abiding Star (JD Acosta, E Allard) – 30/1
– Fellowship (J Lezcano, M Casse) – 30/1
– Stradivari (J Velazquez, T Pletcher) – 8/1
