Kentucky Derby 2014: The Picks

HRS Kentucky Derby

Happy Derby Day!! Now, the moment you all have been waiting for, my picks!!

Topping the list for me is Commanding Curve.  A deep closer who loves Churchill Downs, had a strong finish last time out, albeit a horrible start.  If he gets the good start her should, he will be able to finish strong down that longs stretch.  Following him is a horse that made a major jump from my top 10 list, Intense Holiday.  He loved the long stretch at Fair Grounds and is one of the few pure closers in the field.  If he can stay farther back from the pace then where he was in the Louisiana Derby, he could get up nicely.  Rounding out the trifecta is California Chrome.  Although I do think he will be beaten, he is just too good to leave off.  I am scared that he won’t get to the track as well as he has in California.  Earlier in my handicapping I made a connection between him and Zenyatta.  Zenyatta was undefeated in California, but her one trip she made out of her home state, she lost, at Churchill Downs.  California Chrome could be the same, leaving a state he has dominated thus far and going to a new track with no real workouts, who knows how he will respond.

For the betters out there, here are a few exotic wagers for you:

  • $10 Exacta Box ($20): 17, 16
  • $5 Trifecta Box ($30): 17, 16, 5
  • $.50 Trifecta ($36): 17, 16, 5 with 17, 16, 5, 18, 6 with 17, 16, 5, 18, 6
  • $.50 Trifecta ($36): 17, 16, 5 with 17, 16, 5, 20, 1 with 17, 16, 5, 20, 1

Enjoy your Kentucky Derby Day and I hope you win! Post your picks in the comments below or tweet me your picks!! Good Luck!!
