After this past year in the two soon to be three year old’s race to the Triple Crown, we have seen what could possible be the greatest thing to happen to horse racing in the public eye since Zenyatta and Big Brown. Ok, maybe just the former, but this is still big (brown and white). After watching the Breeders Cup Juvenile over a month ago, a new rivalry has been created, or at least should be. Hansen and Union Rags, one-two in the BCJ respectfully, have maybe started the biggest rivalry in a long time. After the unbeaten Hansen just narrowly defeated Union Rags in the Juvenile, and their trainers released their respective schedules leading up to the Triple Crown for next year, these two horses could learn to hate each other. Hansen is scheduled for Gulfstream’s path to the Derby, with the Holy Bull, Fountain of Youth, and the acclaimed Florida Derby. Union Rags will do everything but the Holy Bull, shortening the schedule in order to conserve stamina for the five week test. This may be the push that horse racing needs to get into the public eye. Just imagine if all three of the Triple Crown races were replayed and talked about on ESPN’s Sportscenter. That would be a horse players dream (behind being the sole winner of Breeders Cup Saturday 2 million pick six). Hopefully this will be the rivalry we think it will be.
