Back in 2004 we were about two furlongs away from history, and then Birdstone happened. For those who don’t remember that fateful day, let me recount the ending of the race. It was almost a win for Smarty Jones. And I mean a WIN. After winning the first two legs of the Triple Crown impressively, Jones was one win away from immortality. As he went down the stretch, it seemed like a win. On the outside came Birdstone. And it was a head bob until about four lengths from the wire. And history would not be made. The streak would not be broken. Birdstone shocked the world. Smarty Jones lost. It was over.
Well, we have a chance to make history with a horse like Smart Ellis. The only problem, this horse has some trouble on the dirt. If he can race well at a mile and 1/4 and a mile and a half on dirt, we might have history in the making.
