Its time to started looking at the Breeders Cup contenders. Lets Start with Coil. He is a great three year old Grade 1 winner who has a great stride. But even with the great stride, it is not the longest of them all in the three year old division. Shackleford has that title. But what he has is speed and a way to command his oxygen usage (thank you HRN user icyhotboo for that tidbit). As we saw in the Haskell, he is a dominant horse that just sped from dead last to first, a lah Zenyatta. But is he a Breeder Cup Classic contender. I don’t think so. He may be one of the best horses in the field but is he able to contend at the distance? He is definitely a top 5 choice in the Travers coming off a win in the Haskell and never finishing out of the money. His longest distance was 1 1/8 mi, but will he make the 1 1/4 mi, who knows. Maybe we will find out after the Travers.
